Pilates in Bishop’s Stortford
Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the 20th century by Joseph Pilates who realised that mental and physical health were closely connected.
Pilates is used to strengthen the body, with emphasis on the core, gluteal and postural muscles. It is also used to lengthen muscles and mobilise joints to increase range of movement. Evidence suggests Pilates is also effective in treating back pain.
Classes for pilates in Bishop’s Stortford are taken in group sessions (see timetable). During these classes you will also be given relaxation techniques and guidance to help manage your own symptoms.
Having trained with the APPI and then teaching Pilates, I am clear that the physiotherapy approach provides all participants with improved body awareness and knowledge to help manage their own symptoms effectively. I use mindfulness and relaxing music to induce a calm and pleasant atmosphere allowing full focus of oneself during this time. With the exception of the beginners’ class, classes are intermediate/advanced and all provide the benefits of a strong core, whole body workout. The last five minutes are purely mindfulness where we relax and enjoy the peace and quiet in our minds before stepping back into reality. Many participants apply Pilates and mindfulness techniques during their working week to encourage good posture and working habits whilst enjoying more tranquil moments in their busy lives – something from which we would all benefit.
I have been currently attending Donna’s Pilates class for a couple of years now after being recommended by a friend. Pilates with Donna has had a huge impact on the way I feel about myself. It has changed the way I think about my body’s positioning .. how I walk, run or do other general exercise. I feel I am constantly building my core so therefore strengthening my body so I can protect myself as I age. Donna has supported me with her great experience and knowledge of the human body. Shes spurred me on to go to the next level, pushing me on when needed. She checks everyone during her classes even us that have been going for years to make sure we are in good alignment. I could go to pilates every day, the feeling of relaxed lightness, stretched limbs and clear mind is my weekly highlight. This lady is a little gem!
Donna you asked me how I felt tonight and I was so relaxed I didn’t feel I gave you the answer you deserve. I meant to say I fell strong, I feel amazing, I love love pilates classes. I have seen an amazing changes in my body, that even when I used to weight train I did not feel. I had lived with pain for over 5 years and now I don’t have it anymore, its incredible. I am aware now that when I stand up after sitting for 20 minutes or longer I use my core and going up the stairs is so much easier. Thank you.
